Afghans Vote Again, Only This Time...
Strangely enough, I found this article in Moving Images magazine I wrote a while ago, and I had forgotten I had submitted it! Anyway, a bit auspicious, as Afghanistan held its 2nd Presidential election ever just yesterday. Contrary to what Massouda Jalal, the protagonist in our film FRONTRUNNER says in the film that she will "run again and again and again," she did not submit her candidacy because of corruption and the unlikelihood of a free and fair election. Kind of sad, to say the least. What is more sad really is the fact that she is one of the most competent, smart, and capable women in Afghanistan, and she has so many great ideas and proposals up her sleeve that have yet to be funded. She needs a US feminist organization or human right organization to at least help her with her proposals so her organization, the Jalal Foundation, can do its work under her lead. Along with creating workshops to combat violence against women and to support women's rights, she's running a literacy and computer program for women. But all this needs support. So if anyone out there would like to help this amazing lady do more work, email me and I'll make the connection.
